Materials & Care
Studio Cosima products are made from high quality natural materials sourced from the best suppliers in Italy and the Netherlands.
Our products are made from vegetable tanned leather. Our tannery is based in Tuscany and has been a specialist in vegetable tanning since 1946. This tanning process is an artisan tradition that the Tuscan tanneries have handed down from father to son for centuries, mixing antique recipes and state-of-the-art technology. This material gives our products an organic quality and ages beautifully.
Differences in tone and possible marks on the material are to be regarded as a sign of quality. The skins are aniline dyed, which is a transparent dye that penetrates all layers of the skin and leaves the leather with a natural finish that allows the natural grain to shine through. Consequently, only the best skins can be selected because no synthetic covering is used to conceal defects in the leather.
Vegetable-tanned leather absorbs the traces of our life and reveal the signs of time . The colors of tannins give the leather a warm and brilliant shade that becomes more intense with time and daily use.
The surface will change over time. Stains, scratches and patina belong to the normal ageing process of your item. The colors will naturally change and darken with use and the patina created by daily wear will fade and evolve over time. When treated well your leather products should last a lifetime.
We recommend avoiding rain and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Exposure to water will create spots and direct sunlight or heat over extended periods may cause the leather to crack or the color to fade or darken unevenly. Never let you product dry near to or on a heater when getting wet, but let it dry naturally or gently dry with a clean towel.
When your item is new, there is a risk of pigment rubbing off the leather as with any naturally dyed product. For the first few wears we recommend avoiding wearing dark leather onto light colored clothing and being careful with wearing dark clothing, for example denim, in combination with light leather.
Cleaning & conditioning
If your product gets dirty you can mostly clean it by wiping it with a soft, damp cloth. You can apply a leather protector to clean and prevent stains that will also keep your product from drying out and cracking the leather. We recommend cleaning with Collonil Bamboo Lotion. It prevents loss of moisture and protects from drying out.
To give your product an occasional maintenance please use a leather conditioner to keep the leather from drying out and keep it supple. We recommend using Collonil Protect & Care to protect the leather from dirt and moisture while treating with olive oil.
Always apply the conditioner or protector to the cloth first, rather than directly onto the leather. Gently rub it over the entire surface to prevent uneven application. Both the protector as the conditioner can make your leather a bit darker.
Our silk scarves are made of 100% natural silk sourced in the Netherlands. The artwork is digitally printed on the fabric with water based ink.
Hand wash only with lukewarm water, do not tumble dry, iron at medium temperature.
Perspiration can easily penetrate the fabric and create permanent stains, also alcohol and crèmes (think deodorant, body lotion, hairspray and perfume) can damage the fabric. Be aware with wearing silk on your bare skin and wait for a scent to dry before wearing the scarf.
Silk’s absorbency makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather and while active and its low conductivity keeps warm air close to the skin during cold weather.
